Our Research Lab
The Bioinspired Hybrid Manufacturing (BHM) Laboratory is located in the Cullen College of Engineering at the University of Houston. By integrating cutting-edge manufacturing techniques with principles of biomedical engineering, the BHM Lab seeks to develop innovative solutions that address critical challenges in regenerative medicine and healthcare. Our research is at the intersection of advanced manufacturing, biomimetic structures, and biomaterials, driving the future of medical technology through bioinspired approaches.
The BHM Lab gratefully acknowledges the Office of Naval Research, the National Science Foundation, the Whitacre Family Foundation, Texas Tech University, and the University of Houston for their generous support of our work.

The Team
George Z. Tan
Principle Investigator
Dr. Tan is an Associate Professor in the Department of Industrial Engineering at the University of Houston. He holds the joint appointment in the Cullen College of Engineering and the Tilman J. Fertitta Family College of Medicine. Dr. Tan earned his Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering from North Carolina State University in 2015. He has developed multiple hybrid biofabrication processes for biomedical products, including artificial capillary vessels in engineered human tissues, biomimetic fibrous scaffolds for enthesis (the connective tissue between tendon or ligament and bone), antimicrobial catheter coatings, lab-on-a-chip devices for exosome extraction, and electrically-activated fouling-resistant water filtration membranes.
